Legionella Control is a legal requirement under the HSC Approved Code Of Practice ACOP L8: ‘The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems’.
This is a water-hygiene specific compilation of the regulations found in the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974; Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002; and Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (as amended) 1999.
ACOP L8 requires that all water systems are fully managed to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria - LCS provides all services and products to ensure you comply with current Legionella Control legislation and guidance.
The ACOP L8 covers premises that are involved in any work activity, so it is very broad ranging and does not just mean industrial sites with cooling towers. It applies to any water system that has a foreseeable risk of causing exposure to Legionella bacteria, listed as:
a) Water systems incorporating a cooling tower;
b) Water systems incorporating an evaporative condenser;
c) Hot and cold water systems;
d) Water features, pools etc;
e) Other plant and systems containing water which is likely to exceed 20°C, and may release a spray or aerosol.
In short - if you own or manage a factory, office premises, a residential care home, or are a landlord - ACOP L8 applies to you.
Some or all of the following steps may be required, depending on the nature of the risks on your site:
- Legionella Risk Assessments,
- Creation and implementation of the 'Written Schemes' required for legionella control
- Routine Water Analysis,
- Legionella Testing,
- Cleaning and disinfections,
- Application of control and dosing equipment,
- Use of various Water Treatment chemicals including oxidising and/or non-oxidising biocides, corrosion inhibitors,
- Legionella awareness training
The first essential step in Legionella Control is a Legionella Risk Assessment:
