Water softeners are required to prevent scale build-up in boilers, steam generators, hot and cold water systems, dishwashers etc, and are typically very reliable items of equipment. They include one or more vessels containing resin, a control unit and valve head (these may be as one item or separate ones), and a brine tank.
The range is vast - from 'cabinet' softeners containing a few litres of resin suitable for installation in a domestic kitchen cabinet, to large industrial items with multiple vessels containing over 1000 litres of resin. Water Softener - Operation
Put simply, as the water passes through the vessel, the hard water salts (calcium and magnesium) are removed and soft water is produced. Eventually the resin cannot remove any more hard water salts and is 'exhausted'. Shortly before this takes place the control mechanism activates the valve head to regenerate the resin, leaving the softener vessel ready for use again.
Salt will need replacing periodically depending on the size and workload of the unit, and the valve head will need it's moving parts serviced - typically every year. If the incoming (raw) water hardness changes, the controller may need to be reprogrammed to allow for this.
Each application is different, and the raw water hardness and expected duty cycle should be carefully considered before selecting a particular unit.
Demineralisation & De-ionisation Units
These can be simple 'Once through' units which operate until the resin is exhausted, at which point it must be renewed, or regenerative units where the resin is 'cleaned' in situ and re-used.
'Once through': Simple, cheap to install, easy to use, & no hazardous chemicals, although the resin needs replacing from time to time. Ideal for low volume uses such as FLT and MEWP batteries, Printer cartridge refurbishment,
Regenerative units: for industrial and other large volume applications, the drawback of the regenerative type is that the resin requires both an acid and a caustic solution to regenerate - both very aggressive hazardous chemicals.
As with water softeners, each application is different, and the raw water conditions, expected duty cycle and particular requirements should be carefully considered before selecting a particular unit.

Reverse Osmosis Units
RO units separate pure water and contaminated water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane. Too technical? It's not a perfect analogy, but if you think of an RO unit as a filter so fine that water won't pass through it unless it's under fairly high pressure, you're not far off. A reverse osmosis membrane will remove impurities and particles larger than .001 microns, which includes most bacteria.
RO units can be used to recycle water which was a waste stream from one process, to be usable as feed water for another, providing an ongoing saving.
